Christmas & New Year

We at Atado sincerely hope you had a great Christmas Holiday and wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Our traditional Atado Christmas Party took place on Dec 19 and we had a blast! Yummy food was brought and shared by all.

The kids enjoyed tug-o-war, “who can bounce the best” trampoline competitions and just generic wrestling matches :-).

A big thank you to all who showed up and contributed to the Christmas Cheer!

Happy New Year!  See you at the club!

26th Canadian National KungFu Championship

Another eventful weekend has passed.

This time it saw a few brave competitors hit the road at 7am on Saturday to make their way to Markham for registration in the 26th Canadian National KungFu Championship, hosted by the Canadian Chinese Kuo Shu Federation.

CCKSF KungFu Chamionship

The famous “Markham Competition”, this time first hand!

We were treated to a friendly reception and some of us were immediately put to work. We know how this goes from our own events 🙂

Atado members are always ready to help!

The Shaolin Quanfa Institute (under Shi Guo Song) brought the most students. Chi Wai Lee (Chung Wah) , Atado, the International Hung Gar Association (all the way from Quebec City!) and Christian Wushu (the hosts) made up a much smaller but no less capable group.

Our first participant was Zach, demonstrating his small back-through boxing form and catching major air for the picture. Zach also was our most active participant, signing up for Empty Hand, 13 Spear and Soft Weapon Sparring! The latter gained him a bronze medal! Congratulations, Zach!

Kai showed the Northern Shaolin Longboxing, sticking out from the other participants with a truly different form.

Nicolas participated in the Empty Hand form and in sparring with a spear. He earned silver medals against formidable competitors in both disciplines.

It was exciting to watch a real sparring event where competitors are actually given a chance to practice their skills. Watch the video below to see for yourself!

In the end, this competition was both a pleasure to watch and to participate in. Both judges and participants were very much in line with our style and held a very fair and friendly competition. Our Team enjoyed the visit and came home honourably decorated.

We are looking forward for this event again next year!

So, today is Sunday, the day after the Royal Medieval Faire in Waterloo Park.

And what a day THAT was! It was a bit wet and a bit windy, but we did great! Our most resilient team, consisting of Zach, Kylie, Matthew, Kai, Justin, Nicolas and Karen weathered wind and rain, put on a great show and still managed to have a blast!

As at the Cherry Park Festival earlier this summer we generated a lot of interest and many people stopped by the booth to handle some weapons, talk to us or participate in the draw for a free month membership, T-shirt and Ninja Soap.

The King himself (impersonated by Dave Jaworsky, the major of Waterloo) gave us the honour of an appearance and a portrait!

Between our own demonstrations, our kids were occupied playing the games, awesomely put on by the organizers of the RMF for all the little knights, ladies and Shaolin.

Zach was unstoppable until he either got banned, had depleted the price stock or the show closed!

All our participants took the opportunity for a match-up with one of the knights, stepping into the fighting ring (with foam blades, of course!) to see who would have won a medieval battle if the Crusaders had made it past the middle east. See some of the videos below!

Thank You to all who showed up! Karen, Justin & Nicolas for organizing the demos, kids for participating and being good fun and parents for helping out!

I specifically wanted to thank James for his cheer, staying power and unrelenting sales job! Thank You James, without you these shows would be much quieter!

Thanks also goes out to Trevor and Amy who helped us set up and take down and who lend us Zach to keep our spirits up in rain and storm!

Edison, we all send out multiple thanks during the day already for your canopy!!! You will get it back dry and unharmed, we really appreciated the loan!

Atado and the Royal Medieval Faire

This coming Saturday (Sept. 19) our KungFu group is booked for a booth and demo at the Royal Medieval Faire in Waterloo park!

Royal Medieval Faire in Waterloo Park

Not quite a Shaolin Form, but not bad 🙂

We should be near the eastern entrance to the grounds, but details remain to be seen. The Faire starts at 11:00 am and will continue to 6:00 pm and there will be lots of action, entertainment, artefacts and food. And we will be in the middle of it all.

I am looking forward for see our demo! Karen, Nicolas, Justin and Keagan have been working hard with our members to get an impressive presentation together in a very short time.

Come and visit our booth and see what we are up to!

Farewell Dinner with Ron

On Saturday, September 12th, Atado came out in force to enjoy the farewell dinner with Ron at Mandarin. We hit very near 40 people and thanks to Kevin managing the reservation (changes) we all got seated quickly.

Farewell Dinner for Ron – Mandarin, Sept. 12, 2015

It was nice to welcome present and former members of the club and Ron enjoyed the best wishes of many of his friends and adopted family. Once again it became apparent how many lives Ron has influenced and even guided!

Thank You all for coming out and Best Wishes to Ron in this new chapter of his life!

New Tai-Chi Fall Program !

Atado’s new Tai Chi program will start this Fall. Join us for our first class on Tuesday at 7:00 pm on September 8th! Everyone is welcome!

If you are new to Atado, remember that we offer complimentary trial classes in all our programs! Try two classes, then sign up and participate in 8 more!

Shifu Victor Zhang, our well known, Authentic Tai Chi Guide, will take us through an exciting 8 week program. His goal is to introduce us to the original fighting form of Tai Chi. These teachings combine focused breathing with coordinated, controlled motion to take us beyond the realm of a typical Tai Chi program.

China Town Trip

Hello All,

The Atado Club went to China Town on Saturday July 18th. We had a great time in perfect weather in a surprisingly empty city. The PanAm games must have drawn people away!

Atado in China Town - 23 July 15

Shifu Ron guided the tour with unexpected timing precision! The group of cars arrived in the selected parking lot within a few minutes, we caught the subway to downtown and had time to roam the first set of stores. Then it was time for a delicious lunch of Dim Sum.

In good Shaolin Tradition Shifu Victor did not pass up any opportunity to learn and share wisdom. We had some engaging discussions!

Afterwards we wandered around some more and visited Dao Shi in the Shaolin Temple in Toronto. Dao Shi’s club has recently moved and has major construction, but we were impressed with his new facilities and future plans. We will certainly have to visit again.

The remaining stores and Bubble Tea were tackled next. Nobody can say Shaolin don’t know how to have fun…

Much later than I anticipated, a happy crew travelled back to the parking lot – not missing the opportunity to help a damsel in distress that was quickly and happily reunited with her family – and departed for home to arrive around 8:30 pm. As long as your car could make it (you know who you are 🙂 – hope CAA covered you!),  this was a great 12h trip.

I enjoyed this outing very much (it was the first I participated in), especially the fun company. I look forward to our next trip, where-ever it may take us!

Cherry Pie Finished…

On July 4th Atado showed up in full force at the Cherry Park Festival to demonstrate Shaolin Kung Fu to an unsuspecting audience.

We had our demo “on stage” at 11-12 and put on an impressive show. Basic eight and crisp hand forms impressed the audience.  Weapons gleamed in the sun. Staff hits cracked the air. Under-layed with music and backed by nice weather this was awesome to watch.

The show was a bit under-visited (due to the fact that the festival had just opened and we were the first act) but we had a lot of interest and fun around our table afterwards. Our Tai-Chi group, lead by Shifu Victor, staged ad-hoc demonstrations and lessons.

Our Kung Fu members demonstrated their skills in singles and groups and our parents handed out cookies and flyers to interested bystanders. Many visitors tested their first weapons practice and Shi Nicolas demonstrated the various weapons forms all afternoon.

We received substantial interest even by the press and television. A photographer from the Waterloo Chronicle as well as a private enthusiast captured Shi Nicolas in action while a CTV camera was trained on several of our blackbelts for some action-ladden footage. I set out a spotter’s reward for a copy of any of us published anywhere by and for anyone!

With all this activity we can hopefully look forward to some new visitors to the club.

Thank You all for your participation and the great show!

Second Party-Crash of the Season…

One of our Members pointed out that Canada Day at Columbia Lake is coming up and…

There are – of course – celebrations all over town and…

There will be a lot of people and…

Atado will be there,

high jacking a nice little corner to do demos, answer questions and hand out flyers.

There will be fireworks.

See you there!
